A 17 year old male from Tampa Florida was arrested on Friday for allegedly being the mastermind behind the biggest hack in Twitter’s history.
Earlier in July Twitter was hijacked and multiple high profile accounts were compromised as part of a cryptocurrency scam.
Graham Clark was arrested on Friday for being the mastermind behind the hack and now faces more than 30 felony charges including communications fraud, identity theft and hacking.
“These crimes were perpetrated using the names of famous people and celebrities, but they’re not the primary victims here. This ‘Bit-Con’ was designed to steal money from regular Americans from all over the country, including here in Florida. This massive fraud was orchestrated right here in our backyard, and we will not stand for that.”
-Hillsborough State Attorney Andrew Warren
Multiple high profile figures had their accounts hacked and messages were posted on their profiles asking for people to send them bitcoin to an anonymous address with the promise to send them back double the amount. More than $100,000 was sent in bitcoin.
Two other individuals were also arrested as part of the scheme. One was a 19 year old male from the UK and the second was a 22 year old from Orlando FL.
