Sheriffs throughout nine counties in Texas have stated that they will not enforce Governor Abbott’s unconstitutional mask mandate that was issued last week.
On Thursday Governor Abbott mandated masks be worn in public unless an individual has a disability that prevents them from doing so. The other exceptions to the order include individuals who are exercising outdoors, people participating in religious services, and people who are voting.
Individuals who violate the mask order can be fined up to $250
However sheriffs from nine counties said they will not enforce the order. The counties include Denton, Houston, Montgomery, Gillespie, Upshur, Kerr, Gregg, Nacogdoches and Panola.
“While we in law enforcement are desperately trying to build trust w/our community and are spread incredibly thin with the huge rise in violent crime, we are now expected to enforce yet another draconian mask law,”
– Houston Police Officers’ Union President Joe Gamaldi
Police would rather focus on actual crimes than trying to enforce an unconstitutional order.
