A California Highway Patrol helicopter crew along with firefighters with Contra Costa County Fire Protection District helped rescue a hiker who fell off of a trail on Mount Diablo.

A group of hikers were climbing Mount Diablo when one of the hikers fell off of the trail. The group hiked to an area where they could get cellphone service and proceeded to call 911.

After a substantial air search for the hiker, he was located around 8 pm at the base of a climbing rock. Due to the location it would have taken ground crews over an hour to get the hiker out of the location so the CHP helicopter worked with local firemen to extract the hiker.

Ground crews prepared the hiker to be lifted up 80 feet to the helicopter. Once the helicopter successfully retrieved the hiker he was transported to John Muir Medical Center.

The hiker sustained significant injuries, but is expected to survive.
