On Monday evening nine inmates escaped from Pierre Community Work Center and as of Tuesday three of the inmates had been captured and returned to custody and one had been captured earlier.
At this time five inmates remain missing. The inmates left the jail without authorization through an exterior door.
All of the women who escaped from the jail were in the same unit. It is unknown if the ones who are still missing are within close proximity to each other.
An inmate at the facility tested positive for the coronavirus and is said to be in isolation and doing well. Governor Kristi Noem did say that the jail is following all CDC and health department guidelines and is taking every precaution they can.
