SUMTER, S.C. – The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office announced an officer involved shooting occurred in Sumter on Tuesday morning. Corporal Andrew Gillette, 37, was shot and transported to a local hospital where he died.
Deputies were attempting to serve a detention order and eviction notice at a location in the 3100 block of Thomas Sumter Highway around 11:30 a.m. The suspect began shooting at the deputies and Gillette was hit in the chest, according to deputies.
“He served honorably,” Sheriff Dennis said of Gillette. “He loved law enforcement. He loved the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. He’s truly going to be missed by this office and by myself, too.”
Gillette served in the U.S. Air Force prior to joining the Sheriff’s Office in 2013. He is survived by his wife and 11-year-old son, the sheriff said.
