Oklahoma City, OK – A Canadian County Sheriff’s Deputy died on duty Friday morning. Lieutenant Shirley Lanning had served over 30 years in law enforcement.
The fatal crash occurred on the Northwest Expressway near the Kilpatrick Turnpike at approximately 9:30 a.m.
Lt. Lanning was driving westbound and for some unknown reason she drifted over the center line and struck an oncoming mini van head on.
Lt. Lanning was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated. Two occupants in the mini van were transported to a local hospital and are expected to survive. Lt. Lanning was transported to the hospital where she died from her injuries.
“It is with a very heavy heart that I request prayerful support for our Canadian County Sheriff’s Office family at the loss of Lieutenant Shirley Lanning,” Canadian County Sheriff Chris West said. “Shirley was suddenly taken from us this morning in a car crash while on duty.” “Everybody loved her. She’s going to be dearly, dearly missed,” he said. “She was a bundle of joy.”
