53 illegal immigrants from Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico were found inside an sweltering tractor trailer by Border Patrol on Friday. The American Driver was arrested after the immigrants were discovered.
As a tractor trailer was approaching from the Northbound lane the Laredo North Station Border Patrol agents who are assigned to Interstate 35 Immigration Checkpoint began a routine inspection. During the initial interview, a k-9 agent noticed an odor that it is trained to detect. According to officials from the Laredo Sector Border Patrol, after the odor was detected the driver was referred to a secondary station for further investigation
At the time of discovery the temperature inside the trailer was recorded at 105 degrees. Fortunately no one required medical attention according to CPB
The tractor trailer was seized and the U.S. citizen was arrested and all 53 illegal immigrants would be “processed accordingly.”
It was unclear whether the driver is facing charges, but investigators called the incident a “human smuggling attempt.”
Homeland Security Investigations is handling the case.
According to Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost, 3,000 illegal immigrants have been rescued so far this fiscal year from life threatening situations during human smuggling attempts like the one described above by Border Patrol agents
“The harsh conditions smugglers expose them to often lead to severe injury or death. Tragically, too many have died while being smuggled,” the chief Border Patrol agent tweeted earlier this week.
